Mrs. Val VanderTop teaches middle school Bible and pre-algebra, as well as other electives. She studied for one year at Dordt College in Sioux Center, Iowa, and graduated from Minnesota State University-Moorhead with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education.
It is too hard to pick just one. I love reading the books the middle school students enjoy, not only because often they are good literature, but also to stay in touch with what they are interested in. My favorite genre is mystery and suspense, especially in a historical setting.
Favorite scripture verse:
I love all of Psalm 139: “You have searched me, O God, and know me, you know when I sit and when I rise, you perceive my thoughts from afar…”
Favorite thing about working at CCS:
I enjoy the community of Christ found at Calvin Christian School. The teachers are supportive of one another and the parents work in partnership with the teachers. I have always enjoyed building relationships with the middle school students, which is necessary to reach them at a level they need to best grow in faith and academics.
Favorite learning activity:
I love showing the students chapter 8 in pre-algebra the first day of class and telling them how all of them will succeed when we get there. Most of them are intimidated because it looks like just a whole bunch of letters and numbers mixed together. When we finish the chapter on linear equations, I remind them to think back to day one so they can reflect on how much they have learned since then.
Favorite student quote:
“What do you mean I can’t bring a garden gnome into class?”
Fun or fascinating facts:
I have a husband, Vince, and three children: Marta, Jack , and Elise. I have taught every grade from 3rd to 8th at CCS, but I enjoy middle school the most.
