Ms. Whitney Walstra teaches 2nd grade at the Blaine campus. She graduated from Dordt College with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education, specializing in reading and middle school education. Having student taught at an inner-city school in Chicago, she has now been at CCS for over a decade.
Who can choose? The Book Thief, Unbroken, The Help, Interrupted, Charlotte’s Web, and Because of Winn-Dixie are my favorites.
Favorite scripture verse:
Micah 6:8: “He has shown you, O man, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.”
Favorite thing about working at CCS:
I most enjoy the awesome community here at Calvin—the families and staff pray for one another, rejoice together, mourn together, and do life well together.
Favorite learning activity:
More than one specific activity, I just love teaching reading and watching my students grow as they further discover the gift of language and story. I love the way that reading together and talking about books builds community, and how the kids can connect what we do in reading to every subject area.
Favorite student quote:
“Hey, Ms. Walstra! You haven’t even been crabby yet today.”
Fun or fascinating fact:
The through-line that I most connect with is ‘justice-seeking’. I love people and I take our biblical calling to care for the marginalized seriously. It is such a joy to be able to share that passion with my students and see them pray for and get fired up about the things that break God’s heart. What a beautiful gift it is to be able to share our faith together!
