Mrs. Joan O’Reilly teaches 3rd grade at the Edina campus. She studied elementary education and humanities at Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa. She has taught kindergarten, 2nd grade, 3rd grade, and 4th grade at CCS.
I have a lot of favorites, but one book I really love to read with my third graders is Home of the Brave by Katherine Applegate. It is a story of a boy named Kek who is a war refugee from Africa. He comes to the United States and learns about friendship, adversity, and faith. I love the author’s use of figurative language with similes and metaphors throughout the book. We have amazing discussions about love and trusting God when things are difficult. I use the author’s examples to help students learn how to recognize and write figurative language.
Favorite scripture verse:
1 John 3:1: “See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him.” I am always in awe of the sacrifice God made of sending His only son to die for me. That is amazing love.
Favorite thing about working at CCS:
My greatest joy is to be able to teach the Bible and share my faith with my students. I love to watch them grow in academic areas, but also in their walk with the Lord. I also love to work with an amazing staff that is dedicated to excellence in all areas. Each teacher has high expectations and works hard to make learning fun and relevant.
Favorite student quote:
“Mrs. O’Reilly, thank you for teaching me this year! You made school turn into a game!”
My goal each year is to help students enjoy learning! I try to engage them in lessons that incorporate games, music, simulations, and hands-on activities to help them love learning.
Fun or fascinating fact:
I strive to love each one of my students as if they were my own. God has blessed me with this opportunity, and teaches me a lot about Him through working with them.
